Tickle My Funny Bone: How You Can Become Closer To Your Mate Through Laughter

Dating & Relationships / May 6, 2014

Are you funny?  In a good way.  Not the over-the-top sense of humor which makes you so annoying, I wish Sandman would usher you out of my presence by tap dancing on your feelings.  My goofy personality yearns for a guy who has the ability to make me laugh.  He is more likely one-step closer to winning my heart versus the intellectual guy who is so serious that stern lines are embedded on his forehead like a road map.  Please don’t engage me in practical jokes either.  I’m not one who likes a person to jump out from behind a door and yell “yahhh!’.  You might get bopped.

Watch a comedic movie together

  • Find a mutually enjoyable movie and watch it together.  I think stand-up works best as opposed to scripted comedy because story lines tend to waver and become melodramatic sparking a serious conversation, which was not the goal.  One of my all time favorite comedy movie series is Friday.  There are so many quotable lines in that movie and it’s funny without being too serious.

Share an inside joke

  • If there was ever an awkward moment which turned out to be funny for the both of you, continuously relive the moment with a phrase from that moment.  Secrets often keep people closer together, especially when they’re funny.  It lightens tension/stress too.

Role play

  • I have an aptitude to change my voice and accent, which is something I normally do with my children but adults, may find it fun too.  Warning:  This can also be annoying to people who don’t care for fake accents.  I have never played “dress up” with a partner before but it might be fun to put on a French maid outfit and entice my partner.

Share funny stories or past memories

  • Many childhood memories consist of funny moments that weren’t funny at the time but are laughable now. Tell your partner about the time you fell in front of a room full of people or burst into a song while singing all loud and wrong.  You can share the embarrassment with someone you care about and laugh at the same damn time!

Be creative

  • Turn on some music and dance or sing your own rendition to song you both enjoy.  Replace the lyrics to a song with your own words.  Be silly!
