So What You Saying?
You’ve seen her…the blond hair, give it to you straight, hold no punches, force to be reckoned with, NeNe Leakes on The Housewives of Atlanta. She has been the talk of all social media, be it the “horrible” way that she portrays Black women on television or how loud and crass she is but at the end of the day the fact remains true, people are STILL talking about her, thus she remains relevant.
What promoted this article was a post that I read on Facebook this morning about Ne Ne showing off her 15 carat wedding ring. I say, “So what!” Hell, if I had been through all that she had in her life, being a single parent, a stripper and an abuse survivor, who had “started from the bottom” (singing in my Drake voice), I would be doing the same damn thing.
Regardless if you like NeNe or not, you have to respect her hustle. She is the last original cast member of The Housewives of Atlanta AND the highest paid housewife in the franchise, making $1 million plus bonuses. Let’s all be clear about one thing, she’s “Rich Bitch!” She has managed to turn her “5 minutes of fame” into roles on 2 popular television shows, Glee and The New Normal and has an upcoming show, I Dream of NeNe, which follows her nuptials, as she remarries her ex husband, Greg.
I have watched Housewives of Atlanta from day one and I have had seasons that I liked NeNe and seasons when I thought that she was doing too much. One thing that I have to say is that through all of those seasons, she has remained the same. She has always kept it 100 and she has never been two-faced. Can she be loud? Yes and so have many of us. Does she represent a bad image for black women on television? She may have her moments but hell, haven’t we all? The difference is that we aren’t on television but that doesn’t mean that someone wasn’t watching you act a fool. Besides, who says that she represents ALL black women? At the end of the day, people need to stop being so damn condescending and let people be who they are. Love her or hate her, NeNe isn’t going anywhere so stop hating and let her live!
