Imagine, sitting in church on a Sunday morning and your pastor announces that not only does he have full-blown AIDS but has also slept with several members of the congregation who had no idea about his health status. I will tell you that I would have passed the hell out!
No, this is not the scene from a new television drama but it could be an unscripted reality show called, “My Pastor Did What?”
This actually happened at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Alabama when the pastor, Juan Demetrius McFarland, told his congregation that he found out that he was HIV-positive in 2003 and had full-blown AIDS in 2008. He also confessed to misusing church money, as well as doing drugs.
Pastor McFarland started revealing things on September 12 and over the next few Sundays, revealed a little bit more.
Church members supported him and wanted to help him until, according to Deacon Williams, up until he revealed the unimaginable…
He concealed from the church that he had knowingly engaged in adultery in the church building with female members of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church while knowingly having AIDS.
With that revelation and I’m sure before but no one wanted to admit it, female members who had sex with the pastor began to worry about their own well-being. A member of the church told WFSA news that
I know a young lady who is a member of the church who says she has slept with him and that she didn’t want this to go public, and she running out now trying to find out if there is anything wrong with her. And my heart goes out to her because she’s been a wonderful church member, and then for something like this to happen. The fact that he didn’t tell them at all. That’s a crime in itself.
Pastor McFarland was removed from his positions on October 5th.
